Work on YoWay has been underway since May. That's when we first talked to Bonnie and Jennifer Emmerling about the new venture. Bonnie, a 2015 Durand grad headed into her senior year at Cleary University studying business management and entrepreneurship, wanted to start a business, and because she's passionate about yogurt, donuts and Durand, she decided to start here.
"I love the idea of being able to give back to my community and am very excited about some of the projects we have in the works," she said. To that end, her mom, Jennifer, said "we are helping her achieve her dream," but noted getting YoWay ready was a much bigger than expected undertaking.
Durand's newest business is in one of the city's oldest buildings, the former Bill's Shoes and Repair building that has been standing in downtown Durand since 1897. Jennifer said extensive foundation work and a complete gutting was necessary. Then, painting both inside and out.
And while just days ago it seemed that it might still be a while before YoWay opened its doors, that "Open" sign was a welcome sight on Monday morning, and that Cotton Candy frozen yogurt topped with cookie dough chunks, Andes mint slivers, sprinkles and more, was perfect for one of the hottest days of the summer.
"We are super excited to bring this sweet spot to Durand," Bonnie said.
